College Professors Say Bible Literacy Gives Students an Edge

June 1, 2006

High school students should learn about the Bible to be prepared for the kind of analysis of classic and contemporary literature that college English professors expect them to undertake, a report says. Nearly all of the three dozen English professors surveyed from Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Princeton, and other top U.S. universities agreed that students who have a basic understanding of the Bible fare better academically than those who don’t.“The Bible is not only a sacred scripture to millions of Americans,” explained the report’s author, Marie Wachlin, who has studied high school students’ Bible literacy. “It is also arguably, as one professor put it, the most influential text in all of Western culture.”
